As most folk in Baelland are illiterate, Scribes are a very much needed service. Everything governmental, civil, military, and religious requires a great deal of writing and therefore a large number of Scribes to do the work. Public Scribes make a living writing and reading letters for the common folk, while others choose to live amongst the educated and nobility, charting down ancestry and writing of heroic deeds. A few tire of reading about adventure and choose to have some of their own, but these are few and far between. If a traveling scribe is met on the road, he has either been charged with writing something slanderous, left on his volition, or is searching for higher paying work.
